If you’ve always wanted to learn about whakairo (Māori carving), this programme is a great place to start. You’ll complete practical projects and learn the hands-on processes for carving.
Our kaiako (tutors) are experienced carvers who’ll teach you the techniques, history and tikanga associated with the ancient art form of whakairo.

This qualification is intended for people seeking to develop broad operational and theoretical knowledge consistent with tikanga and reo in Whakairo.
Graduates of this qualification will contribute to New Zealand as practitioners; by applying a broad range of skills and knowledge relevant to one of the Ngā Toi art forms. Graduates will have a further developed set of fundamental knowledge and skills, and be able to operate under broad guidance.
This is a full-time programme that consists of 120 credits delivered over 38 weeks. Some of our locations offer different delivery modes. These will be confirmed by your local campus and might include:

You'll be able to apply for our Level 5 programme, Toi Paematua - Diploma in Māori and Indigenous Art (Whakairo). If you're interested in teaching, you can apply to study He Korowai Ākonga - Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching).

The Government has announced that Fees Free for the first year of study or training will finish at the end of 2024. A final-year Fees Free policy will replace it, starting from 1 January 2025.
If you are a first-time tertiary learner in 2025, you may be able to get Fees Free for your final year of study or training. If you are eligible, you will need to apply for your entitlement through IRD from 2026 onwards. You will still need to pay programme fees to the tertiary provider, but you may be able to claim them back from IRD once you have completed your qualification.
