Programme overview:

If you’re a business owner, manager, team leader or employee wanting to improve your leadership skills, this programme is for you.

The NZ Certificate in Business Level 3 is an introductory leadership programme that will give you the skills and knowledge to lead a team effectively. As the workplace becomes more diverse, this programme will help you understand and manage the challenges of operating in the modern workplace.

When you pass this programme, you'll get this qualification:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Business (Introduction to Team Leadership) Level 3


You’ll learn about:

  • different leadership styles
  • principles for effective team performance
  • problem solving and decision making
  • professional and ethical behaviour
  • legislation and policies for conduct.

How you'll study:

This is a full-time programme that consists of 49 credits delivered over 18 weeks.  Throughout the programme you will be required to attend:

  • 1 x 3-hour class per week
  • workshops (average of 2 hours per week)
  • 1 x 6-hour one-day Wānanga

Your kaiako will confirm the dates and venues for your classes and workshops.

In addition to these attendance hours, you’ll be expected to complete learning activities designed to enhance your learning for approximately:

  • 22 hours per week

Some of the learning activities need to be completed online. You'll need to have access to an internet-connected device to participate in this programme.

In some locations this programme may be provided by an approved sub-contract arrangement.


You'll be able to:

  • use effective team performance principles to lead a team
  • develop objectives for a team
  • communicate effectively with stakeholders
  • work cooperatively within a team and contribute to the achievement of objectives
  • apply effective problem-solving and decision-making for business purposes
  • behave professionally and ethically, and in a socially and culturally responsible manner, to contribute to the performance of the team

 

This qualification is intended for people working towards or wanting to become a leader in a team within an entity. The qualification will provide Aotearoa with people who have the skills and knowledge to contribute to effective team performance and to be effective in a leadership role within a team.

Graduates of this qualification will benefit Aotearoa by contributing effectively to team objectives and by developing their team leadership skills. They will be able to contribute effectively to an operational team, in accordance with ngā kaupapa o te Tiriti o Waitangi (the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi), and in a multi-cultural environment.



Entry criteria:

To enrol in this programme, a potential student must:

  • be at least 16 years of age
  • be a New Zealand citizen or resident (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue or the Cook Islands)
  • reside in New Zealand
  • a graduate of a level 2 (or equivalent) or demonstrate competence in a numeracy and literacy exercise that reflects the comprehension and writing abilities for the programme

You'll graduate with a NZQA-approved qualification to show you have the skills and knowledge to manage a diverse team of people. You could use this qualification to gain the skills and knowledge to contribute to effective team performance and the potential to be effective in a team leadership role.


Kōnae Ako (Learning Modules):

Team Development | 14 Credits

Over 5 weeks, tauira (students) will describe teams and team leadership. They will then evaluate the effectiveness of these styles in a realistic business context. Tauira also look at the benefits that can be derived from diversity within a team, as well as how different leadership styles accommodate for diversity.

 

Team Performance | 20 Credits

Over 8 weeks, tauira describe principles which contribute to effective team performance, and apply these within a team in a realistic business context. Tauira learn about effective oral and written communication techniques and practice in applying these. 

 

Team Objective | 15 Credits

Over 5 weeks, tauira will learn to set objectives that will enable a team to achieve a specific outcome for a real or realistic business scenario. This involves using SMART goals and objectives and applying problem-solving and decision-making techniques.
