Kāwai Raupapa - Certificate in Māori & Indigenous Art - Weaving

Become part of a rich tradition of cultural expression and explore the techniques, history and tikanga associated with weaving.

This programme offers students the opportunity to start specialising in a particular area of ngā mahi ā te Whare Pora. Depending on your location you may have the option of mahi raranga, whatu, tāniko, tukutuku or working with different fibres.

You'll learn various toi (art) techniques and practices through a number of project-based tasks. These projects will teach you the creative processes involved to complete your work and the planning skills to manage your time. If you've always wanted to learn how to weave, this programme is a great place to start.

When you pass this programme, you'll get this qualification:

• New Zealand Certificate in Ngā Toi Level 4 (Ngā Mahi ā te Whare Pora)

• Māori patterns and designs
• time and project management skills
• technical skill in ngā mahi ā te whare pora - mahi raranga, whatu, tāniko, tukutuku
• working with different fibres - eg. harakeke
• other toi practitioners
• rangahau and research
• history, tikanga and cultural practices relating to toi

• select and apply creative processes, methods, and techniques to create solutions for familiar problems in area of specialty
• compare the processes of others’ and explore creative evolution and variation, to inform own Ngā Toi practice in an area of specialty
• create and complete Ngā Toi projects in accordance with project briefs, in area of specialty
• manage project briefs

This qualification is intended for people seeking to develop broad operational and theoretical knowledge consistent with tikanga and reo in Ngā mahi ā te Whare Pora.

Graduates of this qualification will contribute to New Zealand as practitioners; by applying a broad range of skills and knowledge relevant to Ngā mahi ā te Whare Pora. Graduates will have a further developed set of fundamental knowledge and skills, and be able to operate under broad guidance.

This is a full-time programme that consists of 120 credits delivered over 38 weeks. Throughout the programme you'll need to attend:

• 10 x noho marae (25 hours per noho)
• kura whakaako - compulsory tutorials (5 hours per week)
• 2 x 1-day wānanga (10 hours per wānanga)

Activity directed learning will also need to be completed outside of class time, amounting to:

• approximately 21 hours per week

Some of the learning activities will need to be completed online. You'll need to have an internet-connected device for this programme.

To enrol in this programme, a potential student must:

• be at least 16 years of age
• be a New Zealand citizen or resident (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue or the Cook Islands)
• reside in New Zealand
• attend an interview and selection process to demonstrate suitability to the programme
